SYC Junior Choir meets on Mondays 5-6pm, at St Michael's Primary School, Apton Road, Bishop's Stortford. We rehearse in the main hall which has direct access from the school car park. Additional parking is available at the Apton Road council run car park. We follow the school calendar and rehearse in term times.
The cost is £30 per month on a standing order basis, charged on the first of the month. To cancel membership, there is a one month notice period.
Junior Choir is open to any child in Years 3-6 who can get to our weekly rehearsals in Bishop's Stortford. We do not have a size limit on the choir. We simply want to children to want to be there, get stuck in, and have fun singing together.
The quick answer is EVERYTHING! We start with music the children will know - pop/rock songs, songs from the movies and musical theatre, and then we move on to catchy world music (often in other languages) - stuff that has a great beat and feels exciting to sing. We then introduce music from other genres such as classical music, when the children have become used to singing together and can feel the joy in the sounds they are making.
For rehearsals, children need to wear comfortable clothing - for many, this may be still wearing their school uniform from earlier in the day. For performances, it is black trousers and an SYC t-shirt. These will be available to purchase from February, although we are seeking corporate sponsorship for them. If you know of someone who would like to support us in exchange for some free advertising on our website and at public events, get in touch!
We believe that all children should have the opportunity to engage in high quality singing. Our principal conductor is highly trained in safeguarding and neurodiversity. We do not have 1:1 support available for individual needs.
Safeguarding is taken extremely seriously. Our Principal Conductor is our designated safeguarding lead, and trained in this area. Should you wish to discuss this further, please get in touch.
There isn't space for lots of parents to stay and watch the rehearsals. Often children that are nervous about coming to a new group, feel far more confident and get stuck in when the parents leave. At St Michael's Primary School, there is a raised standing area outside the school hall if parents want to stay nearby and see what's going on through the window. Fundamentally, we want everyone to feel comfortable - if you think this arrangement may not work for your child, please chat with us and let's make a plan together.
